What is ophel?

Ophel Atlas is a GPL-3.0 browser extension and userscript, written in TypeScript, that turns conversations on major AI platforms into organized, navigable and reusable documents, and it is aimed at anyone whose work depends on long AI chats — learning, research, requirements analysis, code discussions or content creation.

What it is

Ophel Atlas runs in the browser as a Chrome-style extension with a companion userscript build, placing a consistent interface over the AI chat sites it supports. Built-in site adapters cover 15 major AI sites — the topic list names ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek and AI Studio among them — so chats, folders, prompts and settings behave the same way whichever platform a conversation began on.

The problem it addresses is the linear, scroll-bound transcript. The README frames the shift as going from "infinite scroll" to "navigable AI documents": a conversation is parsed into a hierarchical outline with anchors and bookmarks, filed into folders and tags, made searchable, and exported as Markdown, JSON or TXT instead of remaining an unsorted history. It augments the platforms already in use rather than supplying a model of its own.

Key capabilities

  • Smart Outline parses a conversation into a navigable table of contents with hierarchical collapse, search, anchors, bookmarks, outline copy and word counts.
  • Chats are managed along two dimensions, folders and tags, with auto-sync from source sites, search, batch operations and drag-to-reorder.
  • Export writes Markdown, JSON or TXT, builds zip packages containing images and attachments, and offers segmented export for extracting precise portions of a conversation.
  • The Prompt Library provides variable templates, categorization, one-click insert, prompt chains and a queue for automated sequential sending, plus selection quote actions.
  • Site Adapters ship for 15 major AI sites, and adapter packs installed from the "Site Packs" section hot-swap support for further sites, with cloud updates that auto-fix the built-in adapters.
  • Global Search covers chats, outlines, prompts and settings in one query, with folder:, tag: and date: syntax filters and fuzzy matching.
  • Privacy defaults keep settings, prompts and chat-management data in local browser storage, collect nothing, require no account, and offer optional WebDAV sync plus file import/export for backup and migration.

Who uses it and how

  • Researchers, students and analysts working through long, multi-session conversations use outlines, folders and search to keep a body of work navigable; Mermaid diagram rendering, LaTeX formulas, 20+ themes, custom CSS and Zen mode ease extended reading.
  • Developers discussing code across several assistants get one set of folders, tags and prompts whether the conversation sits in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok or a DeepSeek harness.
  • Writers and content creators repeating structured prompts use variable templates, prompt chains and the queue to send a sequence in order without retyping it.
  • Privacy-conscious users and people working across several devices keep data local, sign in to nothing, and point optional WebDAV sync at storage they control.
  • Environments with restricted or offline access install manually: an unpacked extension loaded in developer mode, or the .user.js file loaded into Tampermonkey or Violentmonkey.

Getting started

Download the archive from the project's Releases page, unzip it, enable Developer mode on the browser's extensions page and use Load unpacked; the README recommends the extension build over the userscript, which is installed by loading the .user.js file into Tampermonkey or Violentmonkey. A homepage is published at ophel.app.

How it compares

No comparable tool is named in the facts supplied for this entry: the AI platforms Ophel Atlas adapts are the surfaces it augments rather than alternatives to it, and no paid products are listed as being replaced. On the available facts, it stands alone in this registry.

When to use it — and when not to

There is no server side to operate — no database, mail service or storage backend appears in the facts — but a self-hoster does run the extension and, for multi-device consistency, a WebDAV endpoint they maintain. Site support is the fragile part: the README warns that support for specific AI sites depends on site matching and page structure changes, and the userscript build is explicitly more limited, since userscript managers cannot let Ophel add new @match entries automatically and rules must be copied in by hand. Anyone wanting a managed, zero-installation service will not find one described here.

[!IMPORTANT]

Ophel Atlas puts privacy first: local by default, your data stays in your control.

  • Local by default: settings, prompts, and chat management data are stored in your browser
  • No account required: use it without signing up
  • Permissions on demand: optional permissions are requested only when needed and can be revoked anytime (see the Permissions page in the extension)
  • Optional WebDAV sync: use your own WebDAV for multi-device consistency (controllable, portable)
  • Export & backup: export and migrate to avoid lock-in

Support for specific AI sites depends on site matching and page structure changes

🚀 Quick Start

[!tip]

We highly recommend using the Browser Extension version for a more complete feature set, better experience, and higher compatibility. The Userscript version has limitations.

Chrome Web Store Edge Add-ons Firefox Add-ons Greasy Fork

Manual Installation (Offline or Restricted Access)
Browser Extension
  1. Download & unzip from Releases
  2. Open browser extensions page, enable Developer mode
  3. Click Load unpacked and select the unzipped folder
Userscript
  1. Install Tampermonkey
  2. Download .user.js file from Releases
  3. Drag into browser or click the link to install
FAQ: How do custom SitePack domains work in the userscript build?

Userscript managers cannot let Ophel add new @match entries automatically. After adding a custom site under Settings → Site Packs, copy every rule shown in the userscript access notice and add it through your manager:

  • Tampermonkey: open the Ophel script, select Settings → Includes/Excludes → User matches, add the copied rules, and save.
  • Violentmonkey: open the Ophel script settings and add the rules under its custom @match rules.
  • ScriptCat: open the script settings and add the rules under user/custom match rules; the label can vary by ScriptCat version.

Reload each target site after saving. Prefer manager-side custom rules over editing Ophel's metadata header directly: custom rules are retained when the userscript updates.
