LosslessCut is a cross-platform desktop application for lossless editing of video, audio, and subtitle files. Built with Electron and TypeScript, it serves as a graphical interface to FFmpeg, enabling users to perform precise cuts, trims, merges, and track manipulations without re-encoding, thus preserving original quality. It targets users who need to rapidly process media files—such as raw footage from cameras, drones, or smartphones—where re-encoding would be time-consuming and degrade fidelity.

The tool solves the problem of inefficient and quality-losing video editing workflows. Traditional editors require full re-encoding to trim or split files, which is slow and irreversible. LosslessCut bypasses this by operating at the container and stream level, leveraging FFmpeg’s ability to cut on keyframes and remux streams directly. This allows users to extract, combine, or reorganize segments in seconds rather than minutes, while retaining full source resolution and audio fidelity.

Getting started

Install via official installer (Windows/macOS/Linux), Homebrew (brew install --cask losslesscut), or portable ZIP. Launch the app, load a file, mark in/out points on the timeline, and export using “Lossless cut” or “Export segment” options. Docker image mifi/losslesscut is available for headless use.

When to use it — and when not to

LosslessCut replaces expensive desktop editors for quick, non-destructive trimming tasks but lacks advanced compositing, color grading, or effects. It depends on FFmpeg’s capabilities, so unsupported containers or non-keyframe cuts require fallback to re-encoding. Self-hosting is trivial (just run the app), but batch processing is limited—no native mass export. It is ideal for rough cuts and track-level edits, not final production.

LosslessCut aims to be the ultimate cross platform FFmpeg GUI for extremely fast and lossless operations on video, audio, subtitle and other related media files. The main feature is lossless trimming and cutting of video and audio files, which is great for saving space by rough-cutting your large video files taken from a video camera, GoPro, drone, etc. It lets you quickly extract the good parts from your videos and discard many gigabytes of data without doing a slow re-encode and thereby losing quality. There are also many more use cases. Everything is extremely fast because it does an almost direct data copy, fueled by the awesome FFmpeg which does all the grunt work.
