What is agent-plugin?

agent-plugin is ChatCut's plugin and MCP server package that lets AI agents — Codex, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor, Grok, Gemini CLI, WorkBuddy, Doubao Work and Qwen Work — edit real video footage, captions and timelines on a user's behalf.

What it is

The repository is the integration layer for ChatCut, a video editor built for agents rather than for a person clicking through a timeline. It ships per-agent plugins, Skills and a Model Context Protocol server, written in JavaScript and published under Apache-2.0, that connect a supported chat or coding agent to a ChatCut project so the agent can import media, change a timeline, generate assets, transcribe audio, add captions and export. The editing engine itself runs in ChatCut Desktop or in ChatCut's hosted web service; this repository is how an agent reaches it.

The problem it solves is that an agent can discuss footage but cannot act on it. Without this layer, captioning, silence removal, motion graphics and asset generation are separate manual jobs done by hand in a video editor, with files passed between tools and no way for the agent to confirm what changed. Here those operations are exposed as tools, so a request to clean up a talking-head recording or recreate a viral video with your own footage returns an editable timeline, and the plugin verifies that the edits are visible in the editor.

Key capabilities

  • Two connection modes: a local chatcut_desktop MCP server bundled with ChatCut Desktop, and a hosted remote endpoint at https://api.chatcut.io/api/external-mcp/mcp for MCP clients that support OAuth.
  • Timeline operations — importing media, changing a project timeline and exporting an editable timeline — offered as agent tools rather than finished renders.
  • Captions and subtitles generated from audio transcription, plus removal of silences and filler words from talking-head recordings.
  • Motion graphics creation and generation of video, voiceovers and music, called from the same conversation as the edit.
  • A bundled video-gen Skill and submit_video_remake tool that recreate a reference video with your own person or product while keeping its motion and timing.
  • Edit verification, so the plugin checks that changes are actually visible in the editor after they are applied.

Who uses it and how

  • Individuals and small teams on macOS 13 or newer (Apple Silicon or Intel) or Windows 10 or newer x64, where the agent runs the installer itself and connects to the local MCP server.
  • Teams with existing ChatCut Web projects, or web-only workflows, using the hosted plugin route through Claude Code 2.1.210 or newer, the Codex CLI or Gemini CLI.
  • Organisations standardised on Doubao Work, Qwen Work, Kimi Work or WorkBuddy, each connected through a local connector documented in its own README in the repository.
  • Creators and social teams doing short-form work — captioning, cleaning up talking-head recordings and rebuilding viral formats with their own footage — plus developers pointing other OAuth-capable MCP clients at the external endpoint.

Getting started

The recommended install is ChatCut Desktop, triggered by pasting Read ChatCut.io/desktop to install ChatCut into Codex, the ChatGPT desktop app or Claude Code, or by running curl -fsSL https://chatcut.io/install.sh | sh on macOS 13 or newer, or irm https://chatcut.io/install.ps1 | iex in PowerShell on Windows 10 or newer x64. The hosted web plugin can instead be added with claude plugin marketplace add https://github.com/ChatCut-Inc/agent-plugin.git#main, codex plugin marketplace add or gemini extensions install https://github.com/ChatCut-Inc/agent-plugin.

How it compares

No similar tool and no list of paid products it replaces is given in the facts, so it stands alone in this registry: no other entry packages a video editor as both an MCP server and a set of native plugins for Codex, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor, Grok, Gemini CLI, WorkBuddy, Doubao Work and Qwen Work. Its distinguishing trait is reach across agent ecosystems rather than editing features, since every route leads to the same ChatCut backend.

When to use it — and when not to

Choose it when editing should happen inside an agent you already use, the result needs to be an editable timeline rather than a finished file, and a graphical macOS or Windows machine is available for the Desktop route. Avoid it on headless Linux servers or remote agents with no access to such a computer, because Desktop cannot be installed there, and note that the hosted route carries its own version requirements, such as Claude Code 2.1.210 or newer. The repository is a connector layer only: editing runs through ChatCut's desktop app or hosted service, an account is required, and features that spend credits need approval, so it is neither self-contained nor self-hostable.

ChatCut Agent Plugins

ChatCut is an AI video editor for agents: an MCP server and plugin that lets Codex, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor, Grok Bot, Gemini CLI, Google Antigravity, Kimi Work, WorkBuddy, Doubao Work and Qwen Work edit your own footage, add captions and subtitles, remove silences and filler words, create motion graphics, generate video, voiceovers and music, and export an editable timeline.

AI video editing for your agent. The ChatCut Agent Plugins connect Codex, Claude Code, Grok Bot, Cursor, Google Antigravity, Kimi Work, WorkBuddy, Doubao Work and Qwen Work to ChatCut, so you can ask your agent to edit a video, add captions, clean up a talking-head recording, or recreate a viral video with your own footage, and get an editable timeline back.

Under the hood the plugins import media, change a project timeline, create motion graphics, generate assets, transcribe audio, add captions, export videos, and verify that edits are visible in the editor.

Quick install

ChatCut Desktop (recommended). Paste this into Codex, the ChatGPT desktop app, Claude Code or another local agent. The agent installs ChatCut Desktop, opens sign-in, and connects itself to Desktop's local chatcut_desktop MCP server:

Read ChatCut.io/desktop to install ChatCut

Or run the official installer yourself:

# macOS 13 or newer (Apple Silicon or Intel)
curl -fsSL https://chatcut.io/install.sh | sh
# Windows 10 or newer (x64)
irm https://chatcut.io/install.ps1 | iex

In the ChatGPT or Codex desktop app you can also open Plugins in the sidebar, search for ChatCut, and select Install.

Doubao Work (豆包工作) connects to ChatCut Desktop through a local connector: see doubao/README.md.

Hosted Web plugin. Use this for existing ChatCut Web projects or Web-only use.

Claude Code (claude mcp login needs Claude Code 2.1.210 or newer; full guide):

claude plugin marketplace add https://github.com/ChatCut-Inc/agent-plugin.git#main
claude plugin install chatcut@chatcut-inc
claude mcp login plugin:chatcut:chatcut

Codex CLI (in the Codex desktop app, use its bundled Codex CLI; full guide):

codex plugin marketplace add https://github.com/ChatCut-Inc/agent-plugin.git --ref main
codex plugin marketplace list # note the marketplace name
codex plugin add chatcut@<marketplace>
codex mcp login chatcut

Gemini CLI:

gemini extensions install https://github.com/ChatCut-Inc/agent-plugin

Grok Bot: see grok/README.md. Cursor: see cursor/README.md. Antigravity: see antigravity/README.md. Kimi Work: see kimi/README.md. WorkBuddy: see workbuddy/README.md. Qwen Work (千问办公): see qwen/README.md.

Other MCP clients that support remote servers with OAuth can connect to https://api.chatcut.io/api/external-mcp/mcp and sign in with a ChatCut account.

Install ChatCut Desktop (recommended)

Ask your agent to read the complete ChatCut Desktop setup guide using curl -fsSL https://chatcut.io/desktop (curl.exe on Windows), then install ChatCut and connect the current agent. The official macOS and Windows installers do not need Node.js or npm. Desktop owns its local tools and Skills. Run setup on a supported macOS or Windows computer with a graphical desktop. Linux and remote agents without access to that computer cannot install Desktop there; continue in a local agent on the supported computer.

To recreate a reference video with your person or product while retaining its motion and timing, use Desktop’s bundled video-gen Skill and submit_video_remake. See the video recreation guide. Quotes use current account access and require approval before spending credits.

The hosted packages below remain available for existing Web projects and explicit Web-only use. Web projects and original media remain separate and are not automatically migrated. Connecting Desktop to the same agent may disable or replace its conflicting hosted connection; do not promise that both connections stay active.

  • codex/.mcp.json - Codex MCP server configuration.
  • codex/skills/ - host adapters and canonical shared craft skills for this repository.
  • Other packages use relative symlinks for identical skills, references, helper scripts, licenses and assets; host-specific files stay separate. All targets are inside this repository, not another checkout.
  • codex/assets/ - canonical plugin icons and brand assets.

Clone the complete repository with symlink support. When distributing a standalone package, dereference its symlinks so the bundle contains its shared resources (codex-store/build.mjs does this for the OpenAI directory ZIP). Live installation of each host's package still needs host-specific verification.

Requirements

  • A ChatCut account.
  • Codex with plugin support, Claude Code 2.x (CLI or desktop app), Grok Bot, Cursor, Google Antigravity (App, CLI, or IDE), Kimi Work, WorkBuddy, Doubao Work or Qwen Work.
  • Access to a ChatCut project you want to edit.

Optional hosted Web plugin authentication

The plugin connects to ChatCut through the hosted ChatCut MCP endpoint:

https://api.chatcut.io/api/external-mcp/mcp

The host handles authentication when the plugin is installed or first used (codex mcp login chatcut, or claude mcp login plugin:chatcut:chatcut in Claude Code). Grok Bot and Cursor users complete the authorization flow from the host's Plugins screen. Antigravity users select Customizations → Authenticate next to the ChatCut MCP server. Follow the sign-in flow to connect your ChatCut account.

Install instructions per host: Codex Web guide for Codex, Claude Code Web guide for Claude Code (agent-executable copy in ./docs/claude-code-web-install.md), ./grok/README.md for Grok Bot, ./cursor/README.md for Cursor, and ./antigravity/README.md for Antigravity.

Example Prompts

After installing and authenticating the plugin, ask in your own words, for example:

  • Cut this talking-head video tighter and add captions.
  • Add subtitles to my video and export a vertical version.
  • Add a simple motion graphic overlay.
  • Generate a voiceover and background music.
  • 帮我把这段口播剪干净,加上字幕。
