What is Sure.am?

What it is

Sure.am is a community-maintained personal finance application that exists as a fork of the archived Maybe Finance project. It is written in Ruby, distributed under the AGPL-3.0 license, and lives in the open-source personal finance management ecosystem as a self-hosted application.

The concrete problem it solves is the loss of a previously developed personal finance and wealth management codebase after the original business stopped operating. Sure.am keeps the application available for people who want to run a personal finance system on their own infrastructure, while also providing access paths for a browser, a macOS desktop app, a mobile app, API clients, and LLM agents.

Getting started

Self-hosting uses Docker as described in docs/hosting/docker.md. For local development, a user enters cd sure, copies .env.local.example to .env.local, runs bin/setup and bin/dev, optionally runs rake demo_data:default, and visits http://localhost:3000.

When to use it — and when not to

Use Sure.am when a user wants a self-hosted personal finance application derived from the archived Maybe Finance codebase and can operate PostgreSQL, Redis, and a Docker deployment. Avoid it when someone expects the original Maybe Finance hosted subscription experience, which included advisor access, because the hosted business did not work and the README acknowledges performance issues in data-heavy use. It may also be unsuitable for users who need a product with no operational burden, since the project is a community fork and lists 501 open issues.

Backstory

The Maybe Finance (archived/abandoned repo) team spent most of 2021–2022 building a full-featured personal finance and wealth management app. It even included an “Ask an Advisor” feature that connected users with a real CFP/CFA — all included with your subscription.

The business end of things didn't work out, and so they stopped developing the app in mid-2023.

After spending nearly $1 million on development (employees, contractors, data providers, infra, etc.), the team open-sourced the app. Their goal was to let users self-host it for free — and eventually launch a hosted version for a small fee.

They actually did launch that hosted version … briefly.

That also didn’t work out — at least not as a sustainable B2C business — so now here we are: hosting a community-maintained fork to keep the codebase alive and see where this can go next.
