What is rudder?

Rudder is an open-source configuration and security automation platform for IT operations teams that need to keep Linux and Windows infrastructure across cloud, hybrid, and on-premises environments inventoried, configured, patched, and compliant from a single control point.

What it is

Rudder is a system infrastructure automation platform built to help IT operational teams ensure and improve their security posture, and to foster collaboration in Security Operations (SecOps). It covers two overlapping jobs: configuration management, where configuration policies are built in a visual editor or written as YAML code, and security posture management, which automates inventory, patching, vulnerability management, and system hardening against security standards. It lives in the DevOps and configuration-management ecosystem and is packaged as an open-core product.

A Rudder installation is made of three parts. A central server provides the web interface, the HTTP API, and the automation engine, and can be extended with plugins. Optional relays act as smart proxies between the server and the agents. A light agent is installed on every managed system and runs autonomously, checking and modifying system state continuously, in practice every five minutes by default. What it replaces is the manual, per-machine execution of inventory, patch, hardening, and configuration work: instead of operators touching each host by hand, a policy is defined once, applied by the agent, and its compliance reported back centrally.

Key capabilities

  • Security posture management: automated systems inventory, patch management, vulnerability management, and system hardening plus security standards compliance.
  • Configuration policies authored in a visual editor or as YAML code, with advanced compliance visualization.
  • Hierarchical configuration data engine with automated classification of managed systems.
  • Multi-platform management of cloud, hybrid, and on-premises environments running Linux or Windows, though Windows support requires a subscription.
  • Scale from typical deployments of hundreds to thousands of systems up to more than 10,000 systems on a single Rudder server.
  • Documented HTTP API for automation and integration, at docs.rudder.io/api.
  • Central server, optional relays, and a light agent that re-checks and enforces state on each managed system, every five minutes by default.

Who uses it and how

  • IT operations teams responsible for security posture, and SecOps groups that need configuration and compliance data shared between security and operations staff.
  • Organizations running fleets of hundreds to thousands of systems, where a single server can scale past 10,000 managed nodes.
  • Hybrid and multi-environment estates spanning cloud, on-premises, and mixed setups, usually Linux-based, with Windows added through a subscription.
  • Sites that insert relays between the central server and agents to act as smart proxies across network boundaries or large estates.
  • Teams evaluating the tool through the online demo web interface at demo.rudder.io, which runs on fake data.

Getting started

The documented path is the step-by-step installation guide at docs.rudder.io, with or without a subscription, followed by the get-started tutorial on configuration policies. For a quick Linux setup, the installer script is used directly: curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://repository.rudder.io/tools/rudder-setup | sh -s -- setup-server latest for a server, and the same script with setup-agent latest SERVER for an agent.

How it compares

The facts provide no list of paid products this project replaces, and no similar tools are named, so Rudder stands alone in this registry. What can be said factually is that distribution is open-core: Rudder Core is free and open source under GPL 3.0 and Apache 2.0, covering the main components, Linux agents, and several plugins, while the complete Rudder solution is paid and only partially open source. The paid edition adds plugins with major features, support for older Linux distributions and ARM32 and ARM64 architectures, Windows support, extended support for releases, and professional support and user assistance.

When to use it — and when not to

A self-hoster must operate the central server that carries the web interface, the HTTP API, and the automation engine, plus optional relays and an agent on every managed system. Teams that need Windows support, ARM architectures, older Linux distributions, or extended release support should expect to pay, since those sit outside Rudder Core. The GPL-3.0 and Apache-2.0 split across Core and proprietary paid plugins also means anyone requiring a fully permissive stack across all platforms should look elsewhere.

FAQ

Is Rudder open-source? Is it free? What is Rudder Core?

Rudder has adopted an open-core model:

  • Rudder Core is available for free and totally open-source (under GPL 3.0 an Apache 2.0). It includes the main Rudder components, Linux agents, plus several plugins.

  • The complete Rudder solution is paid and partially open-source. A part of the paid plugins and agents are distributed under proprietary license. It also includes other benefits:

    • Additional plugins that add major features
    • Support for older versions on Linux distributions
    • Support for additional architectures (ARM32 & ARM64)
    • Support for Windows
    • Extended support for Rudder releases
    • Professional support, user assistance
    • Training

They serve different purposes:

  • Rudder Core is a versatile automation engine for mainstream Linux systems with a complete Web UI, built to give access to essential configuration management and inventory features to small businesses and individuals.
  • Rudder is a multi-platform operational security solution, answering the needs of most organizations, including enterprise setup and critical infrastructures.

Rudder Core is a subset of the full solution, and the packages publicly available are identical the packages provided to subscription users, with the same QA and security processes. This is not a two-speed model, but a "two-scope" model.

Do I need to reinstall anything if upgrading from Rudder Core to a subscription?

The full Rudder solution is a direct super-set of Rudder Core, so you don't have to reinstall anything and your server and agents are compatible with the additional features which come as plugins.

You may just need to change the repository URL on your systems to benefit from the extended maintenance in the future.

What is the governance structure of the Rudder project?

The project is lead by the French (🇫🇷🇪🇺) company of the same name (previously known as Normation).

Where can I find support for Rudder?

The best option is through a Rudder subscription which includes professional support. Users of Rudder Core can find help on the community channels.

How to join the community?

Join our community on GitHub Discussions or our Gitter/Element chat for support, feedback, and collaboration.

How long are Rudder versions maintained?

Rudder uses a MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH versioning scheme:

  • Minor (or Major) releases: A new minor or major version of Rudder is typically released approximately every 6 months. These releases introduce new features, enhancements, and improvements.
  • Patch releases: For the maintenance of existing versions, a new patch release covering all currently maintained versions is released approximately every month. These releases focus on bug fixes and security updates.

Maintenance policy:

  • Users of Rudder Core have a 3-month window to upgrade to the newest minor or major version after its release. This ensures that users can take advantage of the latest features and security enhancements promptly.
  • With a subscription, major releases are maintained for an extended period of 18 to 24 months after their initial release. Subscribers also benefit from an extended upgrade window of 6 to 9 months between minor versions. This extended time-frame allows for strategic planning and execution of version upgrades.
