What is nova?

Yazelix Nova is a Nix-packaged terminal workspace for developers who want a batteries-included development environment built from focused, first-party components rather than assembling their own.

What it is

Yazelix Nova is a complete terminal workspace distributed as a Nix flake, assembled from first-party components that each do a narrow job: Nova Rio (a minimal upstream Zellij distribution), the Nova Helix fork as the default editor, Yazi as the file manager, Nushell alongside Bash, Zsh and Fish for the shell layer with Atuin history, Ratconfig, popups, status widgets, cursors, and Anima. It also ships Yazelix Forest for the managed Helix file tree and the narrow Yazelix Radar fork providing a collapsible Zellij rail. The product is written in Rust and licensed under Apache-2.0.

The concrete problem it solves is the friction of standing up a coherent, well-integrated terminal development environment by hand. Instead of choosing and configuring a multiplexer, an editor, a file manager, a shell and their many plugins separately — and then keeping them working together — Nova provides tested defaults out of the box, with configuration surfaced through editor.command to select another terminal editor, keybindings.bottom_hints to remap or disable shortcuts, and a command palette that stays available on Alt Shift M.

Key capabilities

  • Two entry points to the same workspace: yzx launch opens the desktop workspace through Rio, while yzx enter opens Yazelix in any capable terminal emulator or over SSH.
  • A managed popup system including a lazygit popup with support for other Git clients and an optional coding-agent popup, all preserving their running process and keyboard focus when the hint row toggles.
  • Split and stacked pane arrangements via Alt m to open a second work pane and Alt ] or Alt [ to switch arrangements, with a collapsible Radar sidebar that stays open or collapsed as you left it.
  • A bottom hint row that can be hidden or restored with Alt Shift B or "Toggle bottom hints" in the command palette, freeing one row for work panes and inherited by new tabs.
  • An onboarding flow launched with yzx tutor begin that teaches the core workspace keys inside Nova itself.
  • A self-diagnostic command, yzx doctor, that inspects Nova's owned runtime without opening Rio or Zellij when startup fails.
  • Distribution through Stable, Main and Edge channels covering eight package variants, Home Manager integration, and a binary cache.

Who uses it and how

  • Developers on Linux who want a preconfigured multiplexer, editor and file manager stack — Linux is the dogfooded platform with full release evidence.
  • Users working over SSH who open the same workspace remotely with yzx enter, keeping parity with their local desktop session.
  • Nix users who manage their environment declaratively through Home Manager and install the checked Stable release with a single nix profile add command.
  • Teams following the canonical documentation at nova.yazelix.com for installation, configuration, keybindings, updates, and recovery, with architecture and runtime contracts kept alongside the code.

Getting started

Nova requires Nix with flakes enabled; install the checked Stable release with nix profile add --refresh github:Yazelix/nova/stable, then start the desktop workspace with yzx launch or enter it in the current terminal with yzx enter.

How it compares

Among the tools named in its own documentation, Nova is distinguished by bundling a Zellij distribution (Nova Rio, based on upstream Zellij), a Helix fork, Yazi and Nushell under a single Nix-managed install with a unified yzx CLI rather than requiring each to be installed and wired together separately. Its Apache-2.0 licence and flake-based distribution make it reproducible and self-hostable by design.

When to use it — and when not

A self-hoster operates the Nix toolchain itself, including flakes and the binary cache, and should note that Linux is the dogfooded platform: native aarch64-darwin builds cover the Rio packages and Home Manager closure, but interactive macOS behaviour and the Rio GUI do not yet have complete release evidence. Do not pick it if you are not on Nix, if you need a macOS-tested GUI, or if you prefer choosing your own multiplexer, editor and shell independently. The project carries 21 open issues, and the yzx command is the sole public CLI — packages do not install a nova command, which can surprise users expecting one.

Delight is the only option.

Yazelix Nova is a Nix-packaged terminal workspace built around Nova Rio, a minimal upstream Zellij distribution, Yazi, Nushell, Bash, Zsh, and Fish with Atuin history. It includes a lazygit popup with support for other Git clients and an optional coding-agent popup.

Yazelix Forest provides the default managed Helix file tree, and the narrow Yazelix Radar fork provides the collapsible Zellij rail. Nova uses the Nova Helix fork by default; editor.command can select another terminal editor. yzx launch opens the desktop workspace through Rio, while yzx enter opens Yazelix in any capable terminal emulator or over SSH. Great defaults out of the box!

Install and start

Yazelix requires Nix with flakes enabled. Install the checked Stable release:

nix profile add --refresh github:Yazelix/nova/stable

Open Nova through its packaged Rio terminal:

yzx launch

Enter the same workspace in the current capable terminal or over SSH:

yzx enter

Learn the core workspace keys inside Nova:

yzx tutor begin

To try the split work area, open a second work pane with Alt m, then press Alt ] or Alt [ to switch between the stacked and split arrangements. The Radar sidebar stays open or collapsed as you left it. The command palette's layout entry remains available with Alt Shift M.

Alt Shift B or Toggle bottom hints in the command palette hides or restores bottom hint rows throughout the current session. Hiding them frees one row for work panes; sidebar and layout switches retain the choice. New tabs inherit it, and fresh sessions start with hints visible. Toggling preserves pane order, including manually rearranged stacks and splits. Open managed popups resize with the hint row, preserving their running process and keyboard focus. Set keybindings.bottom_hints to remap the shortcut, or false to disable it. The hint row uses compact C, C-A, A and A-S modifier headers. Core workspace and Nova shortcuts take priority as the terminal narrows; managed hints follow shortcut remapping and disabling. C-A hl/jk move groups tab movement with h/l and vertical pane movement with j/k. Alt-Shift hints keep menu first, followed by fullscreen, hints and the HJKL shortcuts.

If startup fails, inspect Nova's owned runtime without opening Rio or Zellij:

yzx doctor

Linux is the dogfooded platform. Native aarch64-darwin builds cover the Rio packages and Home Manager closure; interactive macOS behavior and the Rio GUI do not yet have complete release evidence. Use the website install guide for Stable setup. The repository installation reference covers Main and Edge channels, all eight package variants, platform evidence, Home Manager, updates, and the binary cache.

yzx is the sole public CLI: yzx launch, yzx enter, and yzx help. The product name is Yazelix Nova; packages do not install a nova command.

Development

Enter the pinned development shell, then run the local gates:

nix develop
nix flake check
nix flake show --all-systems
nix build .#yazelix --no-link --print-build-logs

The repository works directly on edge. main and stable receive exact verified revisions through the promotion process documented in Development.

LOC Scorecard

Yazelix owns 28,278 code/configuration lines and 5,486 documentation/text lines. The reproducible scorecard excludes Beads, lockfiles, and binary assets. The native pane-order correction and stronger interaction check account for the 61-line code/configuration growth. Agent guidance covers full-launcher startup, socket-path limits, cache isolation, ordered-pane regressions and historical build artifact identity. The startup-picker check uses physical keys and waits for the intended tab's completed handoff or rejected-open notification before continuing. Its control commands share a writable isolated cache and short socket directory; timeout reports include the last screen to distinguish input from cleanup stalls. Documentation covers macOS XDG opt-in and one config source shared between explicit host and Nova destinations. The sole yzx CLI removes alias packaging and compatibility-help logic. Its checks protect the executable namespace, global help, managed PATH and child argument/output/exit status.
